Data can be called as an interpretation of any entity when we want to analyse it with technology. It has become a talk of the world because the world wants to perform analytics on itself on various levels & platforms. While taking an example of literally anything related to an activity, daily routine, easy to complex processes, domains, industries, developments, enhancements, whatever is innovated, achieved or experiences is analysed in some or the other way for the betterment of our future generations. To fulfil or run these analytics, data is the fuel.

- Data nowadays is considered as oil; can we relate this statement to cyber security?
Data can be classified in two types: CRITICAL & NON-CRITICAL. Data is what it does. The value of this data makes it as important as oil. That’s exactly when it can be related to cybersecurity. The protection of the data is something that is considered a top priority in cybersecurity. When it’s in the wrong hands, it’s vulnerable. That’s where cybersecurity plays an extremely important role to protect it.
When it was thought & decided to convert the data from physical form to digital form, the risks have increased. The unauthorized access, usage & diagnostics made out of this data is what we should fear. Even when we are introducing Data Protection Standards to the whole world, it is still not guaranteed that the data will be protected 100%. Everyday, we are losing heavy amounts of data & we are still okay with it! Since we don’t know the consequences, data is like Sand which is slipping out of our hands.
- What is cyber security? Why is it needed?
Cybersecurity can be defined as a practice, a process or a bunch of methods & techniques to safeguard technology, digital assets & data. The best thing what cybersecurity offers is a conscious effort to protect data, which is why, it is needed.
- What are the types of risks and threats involved?
There are complex risks & adversaries involved and they are increasing. Some of those are: Hacking, Phishing, Vishing, SMS-shing (pronounced as smishing), Information Warfare, Cyber Spying, Cyber Espionage, Denial-of-Service Attacks, Account Takeovers, Malware, Social Engineering, Mis-information, Impersonation, Information Extraction.
- If there is a risk involved in data, how can the risk be evaluated and covered?
Depending upon the criticality of the data, we need to identify potential risks of damage, misuse, theft, unavailability, unauthorized & unauthenticated access of data. If we consider any of these risks that the data can have or can possess, we can plan & start taking action for risk mitigation. The creation, processing, maintenance, storage, usage, availability & destruction (when no longer required) of the data should be security compliant & in control of the owner of the data. The sharing of the data should be legitimate & in the limits of the law.
- As a normal user of internet, what are the things that I should be absolutely aware from cyber security perspective?
One should be extremely aware about the digital footprint that is going to get created while using Internet, Technology & Social / Electronic Media. One should also keep in mind to create as less amount of data as one can because beyond a certain point, the ownership & control over this data doesn’t remain only in the hands of the owner.
One should be aware about different types of cyber-threats that can be seen directly or indirectly if something goes wrong. One should also consider cybersecurity as a personal & social responsibility because a threat possessed by one is also potentially possessed by the society. One should also pass on the knowledge about cybersecurity to other for the purpose of spreading the cyber awareness.
- What and how much can be the financial value of data breach or stealing?
To say something about this in numbers, it is already in crores of rupees or a trillion dollars that are lost every year. Perhaps, the data goes way beyond a value that can be calculated in currencies. There is an undesirably large threat to data if it is obtained or used maliciously or for unethical purpose.
- How can an individual be aware and learn about cyber security in India?
One can follow cybersecurity news which are available on various platforms. One can be in touch with a technologist or a cybersecurity professional or a techno-legal advisor to have the queries solved. One should also follow the cybersecurity guidelines & tips that are given by Government entities, large corporate entities & IT / Cybersecurity companies. There are good amount of cyber awareness tips given by well-known cybersecurity frameworks & cybersecurity standards.
- What laws are present in India that cover cyber security?
IT Act 2000 & the latest updates / amendments made in it are the best source at the moment that partially cover cybersecurity in India.
- What is the government policy for ensuring cyber security in India?
The Government of India had come up with Personal Data Protection Bill, which is about to be withdrawn at the moment & will be replaced by a comprehensive legal framework to address the data protection & cybersecurity issues in India. What the Government is coming up with is really a good sign & a stepping stone for the future of tech in India.
